When a young person lands in the foster system, they are given a safe place to live while dealing with the difficult circumstances taking place in their personal life. As that young person moves toward turning 18 and their time in the system comes to an end, there are some programs available to help them transition into the “real world” more successfully. The THP in Siskiyou County offers an excellent opportunity for a young person in this situation to secure housing and start to make plans for what the rest of their life will look like.

Meeting Age Qualifications

The first consideration when looking into THP in Siskiyou County is the age of the potential participant in this program. For the Transitional Housing Placement Program (THPP), the individual must be a part of the foster care system and be 16-17 years old. For 18-20-year-olds, the relevant program is the Transitional Housing Program + Foster Care (THP+FC), while those who are 21-24 may be eligible for Transitional Housing Program Plus (THP Plus). It’s important to check these age ranges and apply for the right program that lines up with the current age of the young person. It’s possible to move through these various programs as the years pass, and the combined effect of taking part in some of these levels of assistance can be truly life-changing.

Different Programs Provide a Different Experience

For the youngest members of this program, those in the 16-17 category, they will need to live with a mentor as part of the experience. THP in Siskiyou County changes after the young person turns 18, at which time they will be able to either live on their own, or with a roommate. Finally, the oldest members of this system, those at least 21 years of age, can also live alone or with a roommate, but they must have taken part in the previous level (FHP+FC).

If you are eligible for the transitional housing program and interested in learning more, apply now. If you want to become a mentor for the young adults in the THP program, contact Children First Foster Family Agency.
