Be a Foster Parent (Resource Parent)| Top 3 Items Every Foster Kid Needs
Be a Foster Parent | You may be a foster parent (resource parent) or have a foster child in your life and wonder what items the child really needs. Here are the top 3 items that every child needs who is in the foster care program:
Foster care children tend to move around a lot. Although it is our goal at Children First Foster Family Agency to move a foster child only once, not all placements work out and it is common for children to move locations. Many foster children are taken from their homes quickly and therefore their items are put into garbage bags in order to get them to safety. Many foster children do not have suitcases, backpacks, or duffel bags to aid them in moving around. The first thing Children First Foster Family Agency does in placing children in homes is to provide the foster child with a nice duffle-bag with a blanket, toys, crayons, books and some clothes. This personal bag gives them dignity and some sense of stability when much of their future life is unknown.
Coat drives are everywhere during the winter and many of those coats go to children who are in the local foster care program in your area. Winter coats can oftentimes be forgotten when shopping for clothes and can be quite expensive. Making sure that the foster child in your life has a proper coat that fits well and is rated for your local weather is essential to providing a basic need for that child.
Kids just want to be cared for and loved. Get to know the foster child in your life by asking what they are interested in and what excites them. If the child is non-verbal consider watching them play in a room full of toys to see what they gravitate towards. Getting a child a toy that they would enjoy goes way beyond the toy itself: it is a great way to show that you love them, care about them, and took the time to pick something out that is exclusively for them. The foster child will not forget your kindness in showing some dedicated care towards them.
These are just a few common things that every foster child needs or would benefit from. Show that you care about the children in your local foster care program by taking the time to meet these basic needs. Donations of the duffle-bag items can be made to Children First Foster Family Agency and will be distributed to our foster children so they can take something of their own into their placement home.
