Becoming a Foster Parent | When researching and learning how to become a resource parent many people ask themselves “What makes a good foster parent?” This question can be subjective because there are many types of people that will make great resource parents. It really does not matter if you are married or single, young or old, straight or LGBTQ. If you have the desire and the love for helping children you can be a terrific foster parent.
There are some characteristics that many great foster parents tend to have in common. Here are some of the common characteristics of a good resource parent.
Love Of Children
The biggest similarity with quality foster parents is their love for children. Good resource parents are typically very invested in the lives of children. They truly want to see the children succeed and grow into good, hardworking young people. If you do not love children and do not want to help them develop, you may want to reconsider becoming a foster parent.
Patience
Another trait of foster parents is having a good amount of patience. Children in foster care have usually been through a lot of trauma in their young lives. When they move in with a foster family they may bring a lot of their baggage and undesirable traits with them. Resource parents need to understand what the child has been through and be patient with their progress.
Stable Home
Another big trait that successful resource parents need to have is being able to provide a stable home. Foster children have typically come from a broken or damaged home. The last thing they need is to be moved into another unstable home. Foster parents should make sure that they have the time, money and desire to provide for their foster child.
