Foster Parenting | Adoptive parents want to understand nature vs. nurture or genetics vs. environment in the context of adoption. How much can adoptive parents influence how their children turn out? Host Dawn Davenport, Executive Director of Creating a Family, the national infertility & adoption education and support nonprofit, interviews Sally Ann Rhea, the study coordinator for the Colorado Adoption Project, and Dr. Alexandra Burt, Associate Professor of behavioral genetics with affiliation with the Michigan State University Twin Registry.
Our goal is to reunite children with their birth families, which happens about 50% of the time. However, there are many children who cannot return to their birth families, and adoption may become the most desirable goal.
In these cases, it is usually the foster families that are considered for adoption. Adopting through foster care allows families the opportunity to get to know the child prior to making a decision to adopt.
Children First Foster Family Agency is a private, non-profit agency founded in 1999 by Mike Logan. Over the past 20 years, Children First has grown from one employee to nearly 50, and from one small office to offices in Tehama, Shasta and Siskiyou counties.
Children First was originally created to meet the needs of children in foster care. After several years, the mission was expanded to include the counseling of children and adults. Today, we have programs and services for children that include foster care, counseling, and programs that give children a chance to excel. We have become the primary Foster Family agency in both Tehama and Siskiyou counties and have worked closely with all three counties. Children First is known for reliability, consistency, and support. Our goal is to serve children and foster parents, and we will continue to grow and change as needed to accomplish this.
