For every young person, in the foster care system or otherwise, transitioning from childhood to adult life is difficult. The difficulty factor is dramatically increased for foster youth, however, as they don’t have the traditional support system to fall back on as they make mistakes, try different paths, and work toward a stable adult life. Through the use of transitional housing in Yuba County, however, it’s possible for these young people to get on the right track even without the support that many of their peers are afforded.
Using Transitional Housing to Make a Plan | Transitional Housing in Yuba County
If all the transitional housing in Yuba County is able to accomplish is keeping a young person off of the streets for a year or two – before they wind up on the streets later – the system will not have been a success. Rather, the way to use this system effectively is to make sure that this time is spent figuring out a plan to move forward. How will these young people support themselves once they are beyond the age of using the transitional housing program? That could mean starting a job now to build up some skills and experience, or it could mean investing time in educational opportunities. Whatever the case, transitional housing in Yuba County is most successful when it is seen as a chance to get life organized for what will come next.
A Time to Build Skills
Many foster children are in and out of various homes during their time in the program, and they lack a steady adult figure in their lives to lead them in the right direction. While the transitional housing program isn’t going to fully fill that void, having a place to live while learning to be an adult will give them some space to pick up valuable skills, learn from others, and engage in other parts of the program meant to help young people succeed.
