Homeless Former Foster Youth | High rates of homeless former foster youth are often reported in the foster care system – which is unfortunate, but reality. It feels like a failure of the system when former foster youth are not able to transition into successful, secure adult life. Fortunately, steps are being taken to improve the homeless former foster youth crisis, and the Transitional Housing Program Plus is a wonderful resource. 

A Difficult Time

When a child turns 18, he or she is no longer eligible for care under the foster care system. Of course, at such a young age, that individual is likely going to have trouble providing all of the things required for a comfortable life, such as a place to live, food to eat, transportation, and more. With THP Plus, the rate of homeless former foster youth can be reduced because of the availability of stable housing and assistance with other transitional issues. 

A Soft Landing

It’s possible that the difference between a productive and comfortable adult life, and one of homelessness and struggle, can be found in the way things get started. If a homeless former foster youth starts out alone and on the streets early in adult life, there might not be a feasible way to get on track. Those first few adult years are crucial, so THP Plus is doing important work to keep these young adults off the streets and give them the support and opportunities they deserve.
